History.
James was the only child of a wealthy Pureblood couple that was already getting on in years by the time he came along. The Potters had begin to think they would never have a child of their own and James was treated like the miracle he was from the time of his birth. He was coddled and spoiled, unintentionally nurtured into an arrogant young man who was fully used to getting his way.
It was no surprise to anyone when he received his Hogwarts letter at the age of eleven. The Potters had been magical for generations on both sides and James had started displaying his own signs of magical ability from a very young age. He was sorted into Gryffindor and quickly made friends with dorm mates Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. He was always closer to Sirius than he was the rest of them, but he considered the four of them his best mates.
Although he has always had a good head on his shoulders, James was never the most dedicated student. He has a sharp mind when he chooses to apply it, but during his school years he was much more interested in Quidditch, pranks and girls. Truth be told, he was a little obnoxious and probably not nearly as cool as he thought he was. He was brash and arrogant. He took to taunting other students, the ones he disliked in some way. His favorite target was Severus Snape, former best friend of the girl he had set his sights on.
It was during his second year that he found out Remus was a werewolf. Rather than shun the boy as many would have done, James (along with Sirius and Peter) spent the next few years working their butts off and studying to become Animagi so they could join their friend during his transformations.
James did mature over the years, going as far as to save Snape's life in their sixth year. Granted, it was due to a prank Sirius had pulled on the boy that Snape's life needed to be saved, but even James could recognize when things had been taken too far. He didn't and still doesn't like the git, but he's learned over the years to be at least civil when he has to be.
Life only seemed to get better for James as he matured. He was appointed Head Boy in his 7th Year and he finally got Lily to agree to go out with him. He joined the Order of the Phoenix so that he could really fight against Voldemort. He didn't find employment immediately after graduation, but that was only because he had a sizable inheritance from his parents who passed on from an illness very recently. He figures it'll give him more time to devote to the Order anyway.
Personality & Skills.
Though he's not quite as obnoxious about it as he was when he was younger, James has a healthy ego. He knows his strengths. He knows he's good-looking, athletic, a skilled duelist and quite intelligent. On occasion, he has been overconfident, but he will tell you he has good cause to be.
James can be kind of a prat at times, but he does have a good heart. There's nothing he wouldn't do for his friends and family. He is extremely dedicated to the Order/Outsiders and everything they are working for. He'd give his life for any one of them, especially for Lily, though he rather hopes it doesn't come to that. He sort of likes being alive.
He has a wicked sense of humor and still loves a good prank, but James has matured over the years. He's not the same person he was during his first few years at Hogwarts. He still maintains his dislike towards Snape, but a large part of it is protectiveness over Lily. Well, that and the fact that he still thinks the guy is a slimy git. If it came down to it, though, he'd protect him just as he would anyone else on their side.
James has a sharp mind and he's a talented wizard. His strengths are in Transfiguration and Defense, but he's also an excellent flier. It might not always be obvious from his usual joking demeanor, but James has a serious side to him and he's been known to come up with some very good ideas from time to time.
